QMJHL, OJHL veteran Eric Theander commits to SFU

QMJHL, OJHL veteran Eric Theander commits to SFU

SFU Men's Hockey

SFU Hockey is proud to announce forward Eric Theander as the newest member of the 2020/21 recruiting class.

A native of Okotoks, Alberta, Theander brings with him experience at both the Major Junior and Junior A level.

“I’ve heard a lot of high praises about the school and the hockey team,” he said. “I very much look forward to joining up with the guys and getting to play.”

SFU head coach Mark Coletta sees Theander as an NCAA Division I caliber talent, saying, “He’s a really talented kid, definitely offensively gifted, skates well. He’s a hard worker.”

In the 2015/16 season, Theander played 23 games for the Drummondville Voltigeurs of the QMJHL, splitting time with the Hawkesbury Hawks of the CCHL.

After playing the next season full time with the Hawks, Theander joined the Orangeville Flyers of the OJHL for the 2017/18 season, where he put up 12 goals and 33 points in 53 games.

“I’m a player that likes to be gritty on the ice while using my speed. I like to bring an offensive presence to the lineup as well as working hard in the defensive zone to get the puck out,” Theander says of his style of play.

Prior to playing junior, Theander played two seasons in the prep school system with The Hill Academy in Ontario, putting up 40 goals and 81 points in 69 games in his final season in the program.

His hockey career also saw him take part in tournaments around the world in countries including Germany, Sweden, Finland, and Czech Republic.

Off the ice, Theander aims to get into the business program at SFU, but also has an interest in finance.
