After kicking off the new year with the 9-game Tom Harris University Showcase, the Red Leafs and Vikes return to regular season action in Victoria at the Ian Stewart Complex. This is the first of three games scheduled between SFU and UVic in the month of January, with the next matchups coming January 20th in Burnaby and January 26th back in Victoria.
The Red Leafs enter the second half of the regular season with the least games played of all BCIHL teams with just 8, with all other teams having played 11 each. SFU currently sits in 4th place in the BCIHL with 9 points, trailing Okanagan by just 4 points and UVic by 6 points with 3 games in hand on the schedule.
UVic will be looking to get back into the win column at home in their return to the ice after dropping their last two games to VIU in December by scores of 5-4 (OT) and 3-2. The Vikes will lean on goaltender Shawn Parkinson, who currently leads the BCIHL with a .907 save percentage and rookie forward Sam Schofield who sits 5th in BCIHL scoring with 18 points in 11 games. With a win on Friday night, the Vikes would move in to top position in the BCIHL, jumping the VIU Mariners who currently have 16 points on the board.
