Ty Westgard continued his domination of Selkirk College on their home ice, netting a hat trick to run his weekend points total to seven in a 4-3 victory over the Saints at the Castlegar Recreation Centre.
Westgard opened the scoring less than two minutes into the first period when he combined with linemates Mac Colasimone and Takato Cox to beat Selkirk netminder Tallon Kramer. In a preview of how the remainder of the game would play out, the Saints evened the score when Tristen Cross took advantage of a Selkirk power play midway through the frame.
The Clan took the lead once again off an early period goal from Westgard in the second, this time with 94 seconds off the clock, and once again the Saints equalized, this time on Derian Bamber's first BCIHL goal. But SFU went ahead once more before the midway point of the frame, this time off a Cox goal set up by Mitch Ledyard.
Selkirk drew even for the third time in the game three minutes into the third off a Dylan Heppler tally, but Westgard's game winner with 13:51 remaining in regulation gave SFU the lead for good. The Saints threw 12 shots on Clan starter Patrick Zubick in the period but couldn't find a tying goal.
The victory for SFU puts some distance between themselves, Selkirk and UVic for third place in the BCIHL standings.
The Clan now sit three points up on the Saints and five up on the Vikes, although Selkirk holds a game in hand. SFU is now just two points behind Vancouver Island University for second place and home ice advantage in the first round of the league playoffs in March.
The game marked the final contest of 2019 in the BCIHL, with regular season action resuming on January 4th when first place Trinity Western visits Castlegar to take on the Saints.
