SFU forward Ty Westgard named Player of the Week

The BC Intercollgiate Hockey League announced today that Simon Fraser University forward Ty Westgard is the BCIHL Player of the Week for the period ending December 8, 2019.

Westgard had 7 points (4 goals, 3 assists) in two games as SFU snapped a three-game losing streak with a pair of victories on the road in Castlegar against Selkirk College.

The White Rock, BC product had an assist on Mitch Ledyard’s opening goal on Friday. He then added a goal of his own and an assist in the third period as SFU built a 3-1 lead. Then, Westgard set up Ledyard for the overtime winner just 71 seconds into the extra frame and SFU snatched a 4-3 victory.

On Saturday, Westgard struck for a goal in each period, including the third period winner as SFU completed the weekend sweep of the Saints with a 4-3 regulation time win over Selkirk College.

The 21-year-old rookie now has 16 points (5 goals, 11 assists) in 13 games this season for Simon Fraser, one point back of team leader Mac Colasimone. Westgard, who wrapped up his junior hockey career with the Coquitlam Express last season, is the BCIHL rookie points leader this season and tied for second in the league with 11 assists. He is also riding an eight-game point streak in which he’s put up 14 points (5 goals, 9 assists).
