Simon Fraser University is pleased to announce a commitment from Langley Rivermen forward Trevor Ayre to join the Clan for the 2019/20 B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League season.
Ayre led the Rivermen in goals during the 2018/29 BCHL season with 23, and finished fourth on the club in points with 33. He split the previous season between Langley and the AJHL's Drayton Valley Thunder, combining to score 25 goals and 56 points in 58 games while earning MVP honours with the Thunder.
"He’s going to definitely bring some scoring ability to our offensive group and he’s a guy who can play at the level we need him to play," says SFU head coach Mark Coletta. "He skates, gets up and down the ice well, and he’s a solid body. We’re looking at him to be an impact guy right away."
Ayre has also played with the BCHL's Cowichan Valley Capitals and Salmon Arm Silverbacks and had a successful Major Midget career with the Valley West Hawks, putting up 55 points in his final season.
"Last year I was a goalscorer and that was kind of just the role that I had, but years before that I was more of a hard work, forecheck, kind of simple plays-style of player," says Ayre in breaking down his game. "I'd like to contribute in any way I can."
"I'm excited to study at a top-tier school near home and continue playing high-calibre hockey at SFU," he explains. "I'm looking forward to the whole experience of university life and hockey as well, and just the student athlete experience."
Ayre is the 14th commitment for the 2019/20 season following forwards Ty Westgard (Coquitlam, BCHL), Christian Bosa (Nipawin, SJHL), Takato Cox (Connecticut Jr. Rangers, NCDC), Daniel Rubin (Delta, PJHL) and Justin Lee (North Van, PJHL) as well as defencemen Jordan Dawson (Nanaimo, BCHL), Colten Gerlib (Nipawin, SJHL), Matt Krawiec (Red Lake, SIJHL), Jake Keremidschieff (Richmond, PJHL), Adamu Tanaka (Calgary, AJHL) and Matt Brown (Richmond, PJHL), and goaltenders Andrew Henderson (Yorkton, SJHL) and Patrick Zubick (Selkirk College (BCIHL).
SFU takes on TWU and UBC for the 2019 Captain’s Cup in September prior to kicking off the 2019/20 BCIHL season in October.
