Huber's overtime winner lifts Victoria to upset win on the road over TWU

TWU Men's Hockey

Trinity Western University lost for just the second time this year, dropping a 4-3 overtime decision against the University of Victoria on Friday at the Langley Events Centre.

A week after TWU had knocked off the Vikes 8-1, it was Victoria who got the better of the Spartans (8-2), coming from behind to win in overtime.

The Spartans held a 3-2 lead going to the third period, but Victoria’s Jake Tesarowski evened the game at 8:12 of the final frame, before Carter Huber scored the overtime winner just 30 seconds into the extra session.

The win improves Victoria’s record to 2-9 on the year.

TWU’s Joseph Sylvain and Brayden Brown gave the Spartans a 2-0 lead just over five minutes into the game, but the Vikes battled back to tie the game early in the second period. With goals from Blake Holowaty, who also earned an assist on the overtime winner, and Jordan Evans, Victoria made it 2-2 at 1:14 of the middle stanza.

Tallying TWU’s second power play goal of the game, Evan Last put the Spartans ahead with a nifty snipe upstairs at 5:09 of the second period. However, that was the last of the TWU offence on the night.

TWU finished the night 2 for 3 on the power play, while Victoria was one for three. The Spartans outshot Victoria 43-27.

"We’ve been saying since the offseason that UVic had the best recruiting class in the league," says TWU head coach Barret Kropf. "They have been snake bitten with injuries and so we’ve always known that, regardless of their record, they were going to be a tough team to beat. I think maybe we took them too lightly at times."

"Their hard work outworked our talent and that’s why we have this outcome. I think full credit to (coach) Harry (Schamhart) and their guys. It was nice for them to put all the pieces together. We have to find a way to get a good night’s sleep and regroup for tomorrow.”

With his goal, Last moved into the top 25 in all-time career points in BCIHL history. Already the Spartans all-time career leader, Last now has 77 points (23 goals and 54 assists).

The Spartans' only other loss this year was a 4-2 setback against Selkirk Nov. 16. The loss snaps TWU’s eight-game winning streak against Victoria, including the regular season and playoffs, dating back to 2016-17. The Vikes only other win this year was a 7-4 victory over Selkirk (Oct. 19).

The teams will play the rematch Saturday at 12:45 PM at the LEC.
