"Wednesday with..." is a weekly feature on BCIHL.ca that gets fans up close and personal with a different player from around the B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League.
Wednesday, November 21st with... Vancouver Island University forward Dallas Calvin
In his fourth B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League season, Calvin is already one of the most decorated players in league history.
He joined Selkirk College in 2015 after putting up monster numbers in junior and wasted no time tearing up BCIHL defences. He was named as a First-Team League All-Star in 2015/16 while taking home Rookie of the Year honours and helping the Saints capture a fourth straight championship. After a season-ending injury derailed his sophomore year in Castlegar he bounced back with a 41-point campaign in 2017/18, finishing atop the league scoring charts while being named an all-star for the third time in as many seasons.
The 24-year old broke into junior hockey with his hometown Beaver Valley Nitehawks, posting 40 points in 40 games as a 16-year old. 77 and 74-point seasons followed, leading to a spot with the BCHL's Vernon Vipers. After putting up eight points in 11 Junior A games in 2013, Calvin returned to the Nitehawks and helped lead the squad to a Cyclone Taylor Cup as Provincial Junior B champions.
Calvin played his 20-year old season back in the BCHL with the Trail Smoke Eaters, where he scored 16 goals and totaled 45 points in just 32 regular season games. In eight-plus seasons of junior and collegiate hockey, the power forward has scored 188 goals and an astounding 443 points in just 287 regular season games. He's the KIJHL's all-time goals leader and sits eighth on the BCIHL's all-time points list with a season and a half of eligibility remaining.
After three years with the Saints, Calvin transfered to Vancouver Island University to continue his education. The Mariners currently sit in first place in the standings, and it should surprise nobody that he leads all BCIHL skaters in assists and points.
Q: Why did you choose to attend Vancouver Island University and play in the BCIHL?
Calvin: I chose to attend school and play in the B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League because it was an opportunity to get an education while continuing to play hockey.
Q: Who have been the important influences in your junior and collegiate hockey career? Who has helped you get to where you are today?
Calvin: Some important influences for me in junior and college hockey have been my coaches and teammates, especially the coaching staff in Beaver Valley and the coaching staff and athletic director from my time at Selkirk College. My parents are my two biggest supporters and they are the ones who have helped me the most in getting to where I am today.
Q: What are your personal on-ice goals this season?
Calvin: My goals for the year are just to continue to improve every game and do what I can to help us win games.
Q: What are your team goals this season? What are the positive signs so far this season that make you feel you can reach them?
Calvin: Our ultimate team goal is obviously to win a championship. We are off to a good start so far this season but we still have lots of work to do to reach our end goal.
Q: How would you describe your game to someone who hasn’t seen you play? What are you strengths as a player?
Calvin: I see myself as a playmaker. My strengths are seeing the ice well and making smart decisions with the puck.
Q: What are your education goals and future career path?
Calvin: I plan to complete my BBA in Finance see where things go from there.
