VIU offence continues to roll in home ice win over University of Victoria

VIU offence continues to roll in home ice win over University of Victoria

BCIHL Media

The University of Victoria kept things close through 40 minutes, but ultimately Vancouver Island University's potent offensive attack was too much in a 6-4 victory over the Vikes at the Nanaimo Ice Centre.

Garrett Dunlop and Branden Voss traded first period goals and both team scored twice in the second, as Mariners tallies from Brett Witala and Dunlop were answered by Carter Huber and Jordan Evans.

Adam Morton gave the hosts their fourth lead of the night with eight minutes gone in the third period, and Kobe Oishi netted the insurance marker and eventual game winner with 4:06 remaining. Evans scored his second of the night just 20 seconds later to bring UVic back within a goal, but Alex Milligan halted any further thoughts of a comeback moments later to secure the win for VIU.

Dunlop lead the way offensively for the Mariners, scoring twice and adding a pair of assists to take over top spot in league scoring from TWU's Evan Last. Milligan chipped in with a goal and an assist.

Brett Clark improved his record to 3-0-0 with 17 saves for VIU, while Alec Dillon was victimized for six goals aon 48 shots between the pipes for Victoria.

With the win, the Mariners move back into first place in the BCIHL standings with a record of 4-1-0-1, good for one point better than Trinity Western which holds two games in hand. Victoria now sits in fifth place at 1-4-0-0.

VIU heads to the Lower Mainland next weekend for a pair of games against Simon Fraser, while UVic visits Castlegar for two games at Selkirk College.
