Simon Fraser takes early lead, cruises to road victory in Victoria

BCIHL Media

Simon Fraser University made quick work of the University of Victoria on Friday night at the Ian Stewart Centre, outshooting, ourchancing and outscoring the Vikes en route to a 5-1 road victory.

The hosts were never really in the game, as the Clan went up 2-0 in the opening 10 minutes on goals by Mac Colasimone and Ryker Moreau. And it only got worse for Victoria, as Mitch Newsome and Colasimone -- on a late power-play -- had SFU up by four by the first intermission.

The teams played a scoreless second period but the damage was already done, as the Clan outshot UVic by a 21-7 margin through 40 minutes. Hayden Guilderson put the Vikes on the board early in the third period but Newsome scored his second of the night later on in the frame to restore the four-goal lead and salt away the win.

Ryan Sandrin picked up the victory in net for the Clan, stopping 23 shots on the night. Zack Wear was the busier of the two netminders on the night, making 37 saves while allowing five goals.

SFU's power play scored twice on 10 opportunities in a penalty-filled game that included four ejections for checking from behind. The Vikes were held off the scoresheet on nine man-advantage chances.

The Clan now return home to host Selkirk College on Saturday night at 7:00 PM, while Victoria travels north to Nanaimo for a 7:15 puck drop against Vancouver Island University. Both games can be viewed on Hockey TV.
