A week removed from a disappointing weekend sweep at the hands of VIU, the University of Victoria picked up their first victory of the 2018/19 B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League season with a 7-4 home ice decision over Selkirk College.
The Vikes came out strong and built a 3-0 lead through 20 minutes on goals from Landen Matechuk, Jackson Glimpel and Otis Goldman. Victoria captain Henry Hart and Selkirks Cole Arcuri traded goals in the first half of the second period before Jake Tesarowski gave the Vikes a 5-1 lead and chased Saints starter Patrick Zubick from the crease.
The change seemed to rally Selkirk, who scored three unanswered goals over the remainder of the frame. Andrew Thompson tallied first with 7:08 remaining before Sebastian Powsey and Dylan Heppler scored just 48 seconds apart just before intermission to bring the Saints within one.
Victoria held the Selkirk offence in check and maintained their one-goal lead through the third period until Hayden Guilderson scored an insurance marker with 3:25 remaining in regulation. Blake Holowaty added the Vikes' final goal of the night into an empty net.
Seven different UVic players scored in the game, while the blueline duo of Hart and Kyle Bird led the way with three points each. Tesarowski, Glimpel, Goldman and Guilderson all finished the game with a goal and an assist. Arcuri replied with two points for the Saints.
Alec Dillon made his first start of the season in goal for the Vikes and turned aside 50 shots to pick up the win. Zubick was credited with the loss after allowing five goals on 14 shots before being relieved by Tallon Kramer, who allowed a goal on 16 shots.
The Vikes now sit at 1-2-0 on the season while Selkirk is 1-1-1 heading into Saturday's matchup with Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo.
