Simon Fraser University is pleased to announce the signing of former Coquitlam Express forward Mitch Newsome for the 2018/19 B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League season.
The Surrey, BC-raised winger amassed 71 points in 146 BCHL games, playing his last two seasons with the Express and the PJHL's Richmond Sockeyes.
Newsome, who also won the Fred Page Cup with the Penticton Vees in 2015, brings a strong work ethic and two-way game to SFU.
“Mitch is a big addition to our forward group,” says Director of Hockey Operations Chris Munshaw. “His junior coaches spoke highly of his work ethic, but he also brings a proven skill set and very strong resume to the team. His experience with Penticton in going to the RBC Cup is exactly what we’re looking for right now.”
Newsome plans on studying Business Administration at SFU, and joins a large contingent of Surrey-born players on the roster.
On joining SFU, Newsome puts it bluntly: “My goal is to contribute to the team as much as possible in whatever role I fit into.”
Newsome joins the previously announced commitments of Jamieson Ree, Michael Lenko, Jordan Funk and Mathieu Jallabert.
