Fontaine named BCIHL Playoff MVP, Spartans dominate All-Star selections

There was no shortage of Playoff MVP candidates amongst a Trinity Western University squad that swept their way to the 2018 B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League championship, but in the end it was second-year forward Jarrett Fontaine who takes home the honour.

Fontaine put his name on the scoresheet on each of the Spartans' goals in a 4-1 title-clinching Game 2 win over Selkirk College on Saturday night, scoring twice and picking up a pair of assists to lead TWU to their first-ever championship win.

Those four points brought Fontaine's postseason total to 10 in just four games, tying him with linemate Evan Last for the playoff scoring lead. He also enjoyed a five-point game in TWU's first round opener against UVic and picked up a helper on the Spartans' first goal in Game 1 of the finals against the Saints,

The 2018 BCIHL Playoff All-Star team was also announced Monday, with Fontaine joining teammates Evan Last, Jordan Rendle, Dustin Deugau and Silas Matthys on the squad. Selkirk College blueliner Seth Schmidt was the lone non-TWU representative on the team.

Last (10 points) and Rendle (9) formed an explosive unit alongside Fontaine and the trio finished 1-2-3 in postseason scoring. Deugau and Schmidt continued their strong play as two of the league's best two-way defencemen, while Matthys picked up four straight wins while allowing just two goals on 74 shots against Selkirk.
