Vancouver Island University scored early on Friday night and never looked back, topping the University of Victoria by a 6-3 score at the Ian Stewart Complex.
Alex Hanson beat Vikes starter Alec Dillon just 1:21 into regulation and the Islanders never trailed on a night where they extended their lead to eight points for the fourth and final spot in the BCIHL postseason.
Liam Shaw brought UVic even in the second period on his seventh goal of the season but the Mariners then struck for three goals in a span of 6:07 thanks to Ryan Lawson, Michael Olson-Eyre and Alex Milligan.
Shaw scored his second of the night with 28 seconds remaining in the second period but that was as close as Victoria would come. Milligan converted a feed from Lawson early in the third before Kenny Britton and Kobe Oishi traded goals to close out the game.
Dillon faced 43 shots in the loss while Brett Clark picked up his second straight win between the pipes for VIU with a 21-save effort. Milligan, Hanson, Lawson and blueliner Darryl Senholt all picked up two points on the night for the Mariners.
The teams will meet again on Saturday night in Nanaimo with VIU having a chance to move 10 points ahead of the Vikes and all but clinch their spot in the BCIHL playoffs. Faceoff is set for 8:00 PM.
