The Lower Mainland match-up between Simon Fraser University and Trinity Western is widely considered the B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League's best rivalry, but Saturday's game in Burnaby should have some extra meaning to both squads.
Not only is it a chance to end 2017 on a winning note heading into a month-long break, it also has serious implications in the standings. As it stands, the teams may well meet in the first round of the BCIHL playoffs but home ice advantage is very much up in the air.
With a road win at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre, the Spartans could head into the break with a commanding eight-point lead on the third place Clan. But an SFU win would bring them within four points of second with a pair of games in hand.
The teams have played twice this season, with Simon Fraser pulling out a 4-2 win in Langley on October 26th and TWU evening up the series with a dramatic 4-3 victory at the LEC.
Rookie forward Braydon Brown was the story for the Spartans in that game, scoring twice -- including the game winner with 3:27 remaining -- while adding an assist. He currently leads all BCIHL rookies in scoring with 17 points and sits second overall behind Dallas Calvin.
You'll find five other Spartans on the list of the league's top scorers before you spot the first Clan player, but a lack of offensive standouts hasn't slowed down SFU. That's due in large part to a stellar defensive core and goaltending that regrouped to allow just 12 goals in five November games after a slow start in October.
Mathew Berry-Lamontagna continues to be one of the league's most consistent and impactful blueliners at both ends of the ice, as he also sits second amongst SFU skaters with 10 points in as many games.
That places him second amongst all BCIHL defencemen this season while his 62 career points has him closing in on the league's all-time leaders, Nathan Sagert (78 points) and Dave Mann (66).
Saturday's game is set for a 7:00 PM faceoff and will be broadcast on Hockey TV.
