Oishi's shorthanded pair in Burnaby lifts Mariners to third straight win

Heading to the penalty box turned out to be the perfect formula for Vancouver Island University on Friday night in Burnaby, as Kobe Oishi scored a pair of shorthanded goals to lifts the Mariners to a 4-1 road win over Simon Fraser University.

With VIU already ahead 1-0 on a Turner Popoff tally, Oishi scored his first of the night while down a man with 3:37 remaining in the first period. And it took less than 10 minutes of clock time for him to grab another, as Gage Colpron drew his second shorthanded assist when Oishi scored again less than seven minutes into the second frame.

Mac Colasimone put the Clan on the board early in the third period and the hosts had four more power-play opportunities the rest of the way but failed to inch any closer.

Spencer Loverock put the finishing touches on the win with an empty net goal late in the game.

Oishi and Colpron have been the fuel that propels the Mariners offence of late, with the pair having combined for 10 points in their last two contests.

Carson Schamerhorn picked up his third straight win between the pipes for VIU, stopping 26 shots on the night. Lyndon Stanwood took the loss, allowing three goals while making 20 saves.

With the win, VIU has now built a seven-point lead in the race for fourth place and the BCIHL's final playoff position, while also creeping within two points of SFU for third.

The Mariners can draw even with a win on Saturday at Trinity Western University. Faceoff is set for 7:00 PM and the game will be streamed live on Hockey TV.
