Weekend Preview: Saints to put perfect record to the test on road trip

BCIHL Media

Selkirk College enters weekend play with a perfect 10-0 record and within shouting distance of the record for the longest winning streak in B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League history, but they'll need to beat a pair of top teams on the road in order to extend that streak to 12.

The Saints travel to take on Trinity Western University on Friday just seven days after beating the Spartans by a 5-2 score on home ice. That game included a three-point effort by rookie forward Brandon Sookro and an impressive 29-save effort by first-year goaltender Patrick Zubick.

Friday's contest marks the first time that Selkirk has visited Langley since being swept in a two-game first round playoff series in March.

The Saints continue to be led offensively by standout forward Dallas Calvin, who holds a double-digit lead in the BCIHL's scoring race over teammate Derek McPhail in second place.

The game is a crucial one for the Spartans, who risk falling eight points back of top spot in the league standings with a regulation loss. TWU is coming off a dramatic 4-3 home ice win over Simon Fraser University on Thursday night.

Trinity Western has been able to rely on a balanced attack that features one player with 12 points in Evan Last and a foursome of teammates just a single point back.

On Saturday, the Saints will head to Burnaby to face third place Simon Fraser, The game provides another opportunity for the Castlegar-based club to extend a lead in the standings -- they currently sit 10 points up on the Clan, although SFU holds two games in hand.

Tyler Basham leads the Clan with nine points through eight games, while Mak Barden, Daniell Lange and Brandon Tidy have also produced consistently for the Burnaby Mountain squad.

Thursday's loss left the Clan on an island in third place, four points behind the Spartans for second and six points ahead of Vancouver Island University in fourth.

Friday night's game at the Langley Events Centre and Saturday's matchup at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre are both set for a 7:00 PM faceoff. Both games are available for live viewing on Hockey TV.
