Trinity Western University goaltender Silas Matthys made B.C. intercollegiate Hockey League history on Friday night, picking up his 30th regular season win to set a new league record.
Matthys made 34 saves to pick up a 3-1 victory over Simon Fraser University at the Langley Events Centre on Friday night. It was fitting that he set the record against the Clan, as it was former SFU netminder Andrew Parent who saw his previous record surpassed.
“It feels really good, but this is more of a team record than a personal record because I can’t win without the other guys,” Matthys said. “But it’s a huge accomplishment. When I first came here, we were just hoping to get a win here and there, but now, every game we go into, we know we can win.”
Matthys has been the BCIHL's most consistent presence between the pipes over the past three-plus seasons. Since a rookie season where he eventually won the starter's role late in the year, the Swizz product has never posted a goals-against average above 2.50 or a save-percentage below .925.
“Silas embodies what it means to be a Complete Champion," says Spartans head coach Barret Kropf. "He’s a spiritual leader. He’s a leader in the class room and the weight room."
"And on the ice, that’s the fruit of his labour. He brings that champion mindset. If you were to ask me what I look for in a Spartan hockey player, I’d show you a picture of Silas and talk about his qualities.”
Matthys leads all BCIHL starting netminders this season with five wins, a 2.00 GAA and .934 SV%. The Spartans are back in action on Friday when they host EWU at the Langley Events Centre.
