Second period barrage leads Clan to road sweep of Eastern Washington

It was a much closer game Sunday night for Simon Fraser University, as they won 6-1 against the Eastern Washington Eagles on the road in Cheney, WA. After beating the Eagles the previous night 11-1, SFU were held scoreless for the first 32:50 of the game.

“We knew the first period was going to be a little different from last night,” said head coach Mark Coletta. “Anytime you beat a team one night bad, you’re going to expect them to be way better the next night — they were. They’re battling injuries, and it’s not indicative of what their team is about, but they played hard and it was a hard fought game.”

Brendan Lamont would get the Clan on the scoreboard with just over seven minutes left in the second period, with helpers from Adam Callegari and Scott Patterson. That line would prove deadly again when Callegari scored the eventual game winner on the power play from Lamont and Mathew Berry-Lamontagna with 2:42 left in the second.

“[The Callegari-Patterson-Lamont line are] playing really well, they’ve got a lot of chemistry. They’re fast. You’ve got a guy who can score, a guy who can set up, a guy who’s going to be gritty,” explained Coletta.

Just 22 seconds later, Spencer Unger put the Clan up 3-0, unassisted. The Eagles put up their lone goal of the game about five minutes into the third, but SFU answered back with three more goals from Mak Barden, Jaret Babych, and Robert Izsak.

Except for Unger, all SFU goal scorers had scored the night previous. Izsak’s goal marked his second BCIHL goal, with his first coming the night before. In all, 11 players put up a point.

Lyndon Stanwood made 14 saves on 15 shots (.933 SV%), while SFU put 44 shots on net.

With the win, the Clan sweep the weekend and put some distance behind them in their first place spot with a 7-1-1 record, three points ahead of Trinity Western and Selkirk College.

This Friday, SFU will look to add some more space at the top, facing Trinity Western, who has a game in hand. The game will be the last of nearly a month on the road, before wrapping up pre-Christmas play with three games at home.
