TWU's Russell named Player of the Week following clutch Game 2 performance

Trinity Western University forward Jamie Russell has been named the British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League's Player of the Week for the week ending March 13th.

Russell picked up a goal and two assists over the course of the Spartans' first round sweep of SFU, including a pair of timely points in Game 2 on home ice.

On Friday evening, Russell set up a first period power-play goal by Ryan Bakken as TWU picked up a crucial 6-3 road victory at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre in Burnaby.

And on Saturday, with the Spartans less than 90 seconds from dropping a home ice decision of their own, Russell scored with 1:29 remaining in regulation to tie the game and send it into overtime. Then, midway through the first extra frame, the fourth-year forward set up Matthew Vela for the game and series winner.

Russell's game-tying goal was his first BCIHL playoff marker in nine postseason games, while the two-point effort on Saturday was also his first multi-point playoff outing in four seasons.

Runners up for this week's award include University of Victoria goaltender Scott Legault, Selkirk College forward Ryan Edwards and Trinity Western University forward Florian Niedermaier.
