EWU's Mathews named Player of the Week after 6-point output at Showcase

Eastern Washington University forward Bret Mathews has been named the British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League's Player of the Week for the week ending January 17th.

Mathews tied for the scoring lead at the 2016 BCIHL University Hockey Showcase, pciking up a goal and five assists in three games.

On Friday, the 22-year old scored and picked up two helpers in a narrow 6-5 loss to Simon Fraser University. His third period marker briefly tied the game before Tyler Basham's late winner. 

Then on Saturday, Mathews assisted on Beau Walker's second period marker as the Eagles came back from a 4-2 deficit to pick up a crucial 7-5 victory over the Vikes. And on Sunday, he assisted on both EWU goals in a 6-2 loss to Trinity Western.

The six-point weekend saw the Bonner, Montana product jump into third place in team scoring and 13th in league scoring with 13 points in 15 regular season games.

Runners up for this week's award include University of Victoria defenceman Chris Manhas, Simon Fraser University forward Jesse Mysiorek, Trinity Western University forward Jamie Russell and Selkirk College forward Jamie Vlanich..
