Simon Fraser University closed out the 2015 portion of their schedule on a high note, topping three-time defending champions Selkirk College by a lopsided 8-2 victory at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre on Saturday night.
Adam Callegari opened the scoring for the Clan on Teddy Bear Toss night, but the Saints replied with goals from Troy Maclise and Tanner Lenting to take a brief lead late in the first period. But it was all SFU from there, as Callegari netted the first of seven unanswered goals to knot the score at 2-2 with just nine seconds remaining in the frame.
The Clan attack kept coming in the second and third periods, with Brendan Lamont and Saylor Preston scoring in the second period and Darnel St. Pierre, Jesse Mysiorek, Brandon Tidy and Mike Sandor piling on in the third.
SFU chased Saints starting netminder James Prigione from the crease after their sixth goal on 21 shots, with replacement Steven Glass making five saves on seven shots in relief. Jordan Lien picked up the win for the Clan with 34 saves on the night.
Lamont and Sandor led the SFU attack with three points each while Tidy, Callegari, Mysiorek, Jesse Williamson and Robby Jang all enjoyed two points nights for the hosts.
Saints leading scorer Dallas Calvin was held off the scoreboard for the second straight night as Selkirk dropped both ends of their two-game Lower Mainland road swing.
The victory brings SFU (7-4-0-0) just two points back of the Saints (8-4-0-0) for first place in the BCIHL standings heading into 2016.
