Eastern Washington University was officially eliminated from the BCIHL playoff race on Friday night when Simon Fraser picked up a shootout win at Selkirk College, but that didn't stop the Eagles from bearing down to record a big home victory over the Clan on Saturday.
Paxton Bell led the way for the hosts with goals in the first and second periods on a night where Eastern never trailed on the scoreboard.
Alec Burks had put the home side up early with a power-play marker less than three minutes into regulation, and Bell doubled the advantage midway through the frame. Michael Sandor netted SFU's first of the night off a feed from brother Nick on a Clan man-advantage to narrow the score to 2-1 after 20 minutes.
Bell and SFU's Jono Ceci exchanged second period goals before Beau Walker put the game away with a pair of empty net marker late in the third period.
Walker finished the night with four points while Bell added three. Burks and Chase Wharton picked up two points apiece.
Tyler O'Donnell recorded the win in net for Eastern, turning aside 22 shots on the night. Andrew Parent took the loss for the Clan.
The Eagles will look to build some late-season momentum on Friday when they begin a home-and-home weekend series against Selkirk College, while SFU return home to host Trinity Western on Saturday.
