The British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League has unveiled its award winners for the month of November, including games played the weekend of December 5/6.
Player of the Month - PJ Buys, Trinity Western University
Buys has been an impact addition for the Spartans as a rookie, and one of the BCIHL's top offensive weapons all season. He chipped in early in the month in wins over Selkirk College and EWU, but did his best work as the semester drew to a close. The Ontario product posted back-to-back four point games in an eventual shootout loss at SFU and a home win over the Eagles. His 11-point month elevated him to fourth amongst the league scoring leaders and helped the Spartans to an all-time best opening half.
Defenceman of the Month - Dylan Hykawy, University of Victoria
Hykawy has been a two-way force who eats minutes on the blueline for the resurgent Vikes. In addition to his strong two-way play, the 21-year old fired home seven goals in November. He struck for a pair in close losses to SFU and Selkirk and fired home a hat trick in a 6-4 home victory over Simon Fraser. Hykawy's 15 points now lead all BCIHL defencemen and his 10 goals have him tied for third overall amongst all skaters.
Goaltender of the Month - Silas Matthys, Trinity Western University
Matthys was the backbone of an effective Spartans defence in November, playing every minutes of the teams four games while picking up three wins and a shootout loss. The Swiss product opened the month with a 39-save shutout over Selkirk College and back-to-back road wins at Eastern Washington. His goals-against average (1.71) and save-percentage (.949) led all goaltenders during the month, and he heads into the break with a BCIHL-best eight wins.
Rookie of the Month - Adam Callegari, Simon Fraser University
Callegari missed most of October due to injury but has quickly made up for lost time playing on the Clan's top line. The former Aldergrove Kodiaks forward picked up 12 points in eight games during the month, including six points in late semester wins over UVic, Trinity Western and Eastern Washington. He now sits second in team scoring and 10th amongst the league leaders with 14 points despite having played in just 10 of SFU's 14 fall semester games.
