After opening the regular season with an uncharacteristically poor 1-3-1 record, it was fair to wonder whether Selkirk College were on the downswing. But, just three weeks later, any doubts about the two-time defending BCIHL champs have been swept away.
The Saints extended their league-record regular season/playoffs home winning streak to 29 games this weekend with a sweep of Simon Fraser University in Castlegar.
On Friday, Selkirk scored four goals in the first period and cruised from there to a 4-2 win. Jesse Knowler, Alex Milligan and Jackson Garrett all scored on power-plays in the frame, while Stefan Gonzales added an even-strength marker.
Jared Eng and Jesse Williamson replied for the Clan on man-advantage opportunities of their own, but couldn't cut further into the Saints lead over the final 26 minutes of action.
James Prigione picked up the win for the hosts with a 35-save effort while SFU's Andrew Parent was handed his first loss of the season, allowing four goals on 28 shots.
And in the rematch on Saturday, the Saints picked up two points via a strong third period that saw them break a tie with three unanswered goals in a 5-2 victory.
Goals from Garrett and Logan Proulx sandwiched a Saylor Preston marker and gave Selkirk a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes, with SFU's Trent Murdoch knotting the game with 6:53 remaining in the second period.
But a goal from Steven Pantzopoulos just 46 seconds into the third period put the hosts ahead for good, as Logan Proulx and Ryan Edwards would add insurance markers and seal the win.
Selkirk's top line of Garrett, Proulx and Darnell Dyck was dangerous once again, combining for eight points on the night.
Steven Glass stopped 27 shots for the Saints to pick up his first BCIHL win. Jordan Liem took the loss with 19 saves and five goals allowed.
The teams will meet again on Saturday night in Burnaby for their fourth match-up of the season. On Friday, Selkirk will look for their first win over Trinity Western in three tries, as the Spartans picked up a pair of home wins in October by 5-4 and 5-3 scores.
