The Simon Fraser University Men's Hockey team is pleased to announce its second student athlete commitment for the 2014-15 season. Joining SFU is 22-year-old forward Matthew Luongo who played with Selkirk College of the B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League in 2013-14.
"I've known Matt and his family for several years and we are adding a quality young man both on and off the ice," SFU Head Coach Mark Coletta said. "He will fit in very well with our group and hopefully his championship experiences at Selkirk will rub off in our dressing room."
"I'm extremely excited to come to SFU due to the fact that I have the opportunity to receive a top notch education while continuing to play hockey at a high level," exclaimed Luongo. "In my first season with SFU, I look most forward to playing a role in building toward a BCIHL championship and establishing myself as leader on the ice and in the classroom."
Luongo, who's from Surrey, spent the last two seasons with Selkirk College, posting a goal and 13 assists in 43 games. He also played eight playoff games over the last two seasons, winning back-to-back BCIHL championships with the Saints.
In 2011-12, Luongo put up nine goals and 24 assists in 43 games plus nine points in 11 playoff games with the Pacific Junior Hockey League's Aldergrove Kodiaks. Overall, Luongo's PJHL totals include 24 goals and 73 points over three seasons.
He spent the 2009-10 season playing with the Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s Neepawa Natives and SJHL's Estevan Bruins. He spent part of 2010-11 with Whitecourt of the North West Junior Hockey League, winning a league championship with the Wolverines.
"I would describe my game as gritty and in your face," added Luongo. "I take great pride in being defensively responsible while being able to contribute offensively occasionally."
"Matt has a history of being part of winning programs and we look forward to him bringing his hard working style and speed to our team," continued Coletta. "We are very excited to have Matt on board and see him on the ice in late August for training camp."
Luongo joins defenseman Mathew Berry-Lamontagna as two recruits thus far in what is expected to be a very strong recruiting class for the 2014-15 season for SFU.
SFU Men's Hockey was re-established in 2004 and competes in the British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League (BCIHL). The program focuses on competition, academics, and community service as its core values.
Last year, SFU placed second in BCIHL standings while also earning strong results in exhibition games against NCAA Division 1, CIS, and ACAC opponents. For more information about the SFU Hockey program please visit www.sfuhockey.com
