The Eastern Washington University bench staff will have a change for the 2014/15 season, as Pat Hanlon has been promoted to Head Coach and Bret Kellogg to Associate Head Coach while former head coach Bill Shaw will be devoting all of his time to his role as General Manager going forward.
Shaw had been the Eagles' Head Coach/GM for EWU's first three seasons in the BCIHL but had said he’d been looking to pass off the coaching duties once he found a couple of qualified individuals.
In Hanlon and Kellogg, Shaw believes he’s found the right people.
Both Pat and Bret care a lot about this program and are interested in improving the on ice product, culture, and experience of being an Eagle.
The ability for Shaw to devote his time to the GM role is expected to help ease the game day preparation and administration as duties can be distributed much easier.
Hanlon who was born in Trenton, MI played his college hockey at Indiana University in the early 1980's before becoming a coach while Kellogg, a Spokane native and former EWU player, has jumped right in to the coaching role bringing a tremendous amount of passion and insight for all players.
Previous to joining EWU as an assistant coach during the 2011/12 season, Hanlon coached prep school hockey at Albany Academy, high school hockey in Chicago, and NCAA hockey at the University of Notre Dame.
During his time at Albany Academy, Hanlon produced Rich Brennan and Craig Darby who would both go on to play in the NCAA and NHL. Outside of his coaching, he’s also been involved with the 1992 US Men's Olympic Team as a training coach.
Kellogg played five years at EWU, serving as the team captain as a senior providing the same leadership he has brought behind the bench. Prior to attending EWU, he played his junior hockey in Spokane and Coeur d’Alene.
As a player he was known for his prowess in the faceoff circle and on the penalty kill.
Hanlon and Kellogg plan to put their stamp on this program and make the Eagles a threat to win every night in the BCIHL this season. They will have a team centered around hard work, competition, and an up-tempo game that the EWU community can be proud of.
