Trinity Western University goaltender Silas Matthys has been named the British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League's 2014 Playoff MVP after he led the Spartans to their first-ever League Finals.
Matthys started all five of TWU's postseason games and was tremendous throughout, particularly in a first round upset win over Simon Fraser University.
Against the Clan, the 21-year old allowed just five goals in three games and saved his best for an elimination contest where he turned aside 40 of 41 shots and was named the game's first star.
"Silas is a young man who continues to strive towards excellence on and off the ice," says Spartans head coach Barret Kropf. "This has led to continual improvement this year and allowed his performance to improve down the stretch and give us a chance to win each game. He's a solid goaltender with a huge future in our league and beyond!"
Matthys finished the 2014 BCIHL postseason with a record of two wins and three losses along with a 3.20 goals-against average and .921 save-percentage.
The 2014 BCIHL Playoff All-Star team was also announced Tuesday, with Matthys joining Trinity Western teammates J.P. Villeneuve and Blkair Murphy along with Selkirk College's Cody Fidgett, Connor McLaughlin and Tanner Lenting.
All-Star Team: Forwards: Cody Fidgett (Selkirk), Connor McLaughlin (Selkirk), J.P. Villeneueve (TWU).
Defencemen: Tanner Lenting (Selkirk), Blair Murphy (TWU).
