Eastern Washington University is pleased to announce a commitment from forward Rudy Sulmonte (Leavittown, NY) to join the Eagles for the 2014/14 B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League season.
Sulmonte comes to EWU after finishing his junior hockey career with the Corpus Christi IceRays of the North American Hockey League in 2012/13. The 5-foot-9, 175-pound Sulmonte will bring with him much needed scoring punch that the Eagles have lacked this season.
Aside from his time in the NAHL, Sulmonte also bring with him two years of Major Junior experience playing for both the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds of the OHL and the Moncton Wildcats of the QMJHL.
At EWU, Sulmonte will be reunited with former IceRays teammate Beau Walker, who will also be returning to the program after exploring the professional hockey route this season.
"Rudy is really going to help boost our offensive production next season as well as bring with him the experience of playing at a high level," says Eagles head coach Bill Shaw.
"We need to improve in all areas on and off the ice and this is just the start of the transformation you will see in our program. The level of play in the league has skyrocketed in the past 18 months and a guy like Rudy can do a lot to help us get the program to the top."
Shaw also credited assistant coach Pat Hanlon for the commitment.
"Pat has taken on the responsibility of making weekly contact with players this year and we feel it's really helped us stay on the radar when it comes time for players to make decisions on their future."
Sulmonte is EWU's foirst commitment for the 2014/15 season. Additional player announcements will be made in the coming weeks.
