The Selkirk College Men's Hockey program is pleased to announce a playing commitment from forward Connor Beauchemin (Surrey, B.C.) to attend Selkirk College and compete for the Saints beginning in the 2014/15 B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League season.
Beauchemin is a 5-foot-10, 180 pound forward who is completing his fourth season in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League as a member of the Castlegar Rebels.
The 20-year old joined Castlegar at the end of November in a trade from the Golden Rockets and finished the season as the Rebels' leading scorer with 30 goals and 56 points in 52 games played.
Last season, Beauchemin finished fourth in the KIJHL in goals with 33 and 10th in points with 64. He added 10 more goals in the playoffs, helping to lead Golden to a berth in the Kootenay Conference finals.
Overall, the Surrey, B.C. product has scored 84 goals and 159 points in 176 KIJHL games and is one of just five players who has scored 30 goals in both the 2012/13 and 2013/14 seasons.
"Connor is a player we've been tracking and recruiting since midway through the 2012/13 season, and we're thrilled that he's made the decision to join our program in September," says Saints head coach Jeff Dubois. "He has a dynamic skill set and he's proven himself as one of the top goal scorers in the KIJHL. I think his skating and shot make him a player who can contribute immediately at the college level.'
'I'm really looking forward to continuing my hockey career at a high level while obtaining an education,' says Beauchemin, who describes himself as a hard-working, offensive-minded forward who's good around the net. 'My goals in my first season at Selkirk College are to succeed academically while doing the most I can to help the Saints win another BCIHL championship."
Castlegar Rebels head coach Jesse Dorrans says the Saints are adding an impact student-athlete both on and off the ice.
"Selkirk College is adding a quality hockey player and also getting a great young man," says Dorrans. "As an organization we’re excited for Connor to have the opportunity to be joining such an exciting hockey program. He will fit in nicely with the style of game that Coach Dubois has his team playing."
Beauchemin is the Saints’ third commitment for the 2014/14 season, joining KIJHL scoring leader Jamie Vlanich (Nelson Leafs) and defenceman Curtis Toneff (Campbell River Storm, VIJHL).
The Saints next home game is on Saturday, March 1st when they close out their regular season schedule against Trinity Western University. Faceoff is set for 7:30 PM.
