Thompson Rivers University had victory within reach in their matchup against Simon Fraser University on Saturday night, but ultimately fell 1-0 for their second loss of this weekend’s home doubleheader versus the Clan.
The game’s lone goal was scored by SFU defenceman Scott Brkich in the second period on a powerplay.
Chris Solecki got the call between the pipes for a second straight game and was outstanding in turning aside 45 of the Clan's 46 shots. Meanwhile, SFU starter Andrew Parent posted a 25-save shutout.
TRU was shorthanded often during a second period that included five five penalty kills -- including a minute and a half of being short two men. Overall, the 'Pack went 0 for 3 on the power play.
The WolfPack continue to battle with a heavily depleted roster. Three out of the team's top four defencemen sat this game out including Cameron Weir, Ryan Cuthbert, and Alex Martin.
"Given our injury situation we still played very competitively," says TRU head coach Don Schulz. "With that kind of effort once we get healthy we will be a dangerous team at playoffs."
Schulz credited Scott Bollefer for stepping up his game.
"I have to give credit to him. He logged a lot of minutes, the most out of all our players, and he was steady on defence all night."
This weekend marks the first this season where TRU's top line of Duncan Schulz, Josh MacDonald, and Tyler Berkholz were unable to make it onto the scoresheet.
"Collectively I'm pretty happy with most of the guys, they played really hard. We just came up a little short," says Schulz.
He added: "This game is a character builder and an indicator of how hard we have to play and what we have to do to be successful. We were that close given our injuries and everything, and once we get healthy we will be that much stronger for it."
The WolfPack do not return to action until February 8th when they will hit the road to face off against Simon Fraser University for the third straight game. The 'Pack are looking to use this week off to heal up and return to a healthy roster.
