It wasn’t a waxing like the night before, but the Thompson Rivers University Men's Hockey team pulled out another road victory on Saturday to sweep their series against the University of Victoria. The ‘Pack downed the Vikes 6-5 in a come-from-behind win at the Ian Stewart Complex.
UVic played a much tougher game than they had a night earlier and held a 3-1 lead midway through the second period until TRU mounted a comeback that was ignited by two huge goals.
The first one came off the stick of Blake Moynes. Brandon Watson then bagged the tying goal and the eventual game winner later in the third.
The scoring was more spread out this time around, with all the forward lines in on the party.
Josh MacDonald did add another to his season total, pushing him to six on the year. Converted defenceman Travis Herlein had two assists while fellow blueliner Brodie Gibbon had three assists of his own.
Chris Solecki got the start in the blue paint and played well, turning away 29 out of the 34 shots he faced.
"Of course we're happy with the start to our season," head coach Don Schulz said. "We have a history of blowing games there on the road. To take two to start the season is great."
Defenceman Alex Martin had to leave the game after the first period with a cut on his chin. Halfway through the first period he sustained a laceration from incidental contact with an opposing player. Coach Schulz figures he may need some stitches once he gets back into Kamloops, but that he shouldn't miss any game action.
TRU looks to build their first winning streak of the season next weekend at their home opener, as they play host to the Trinity Western Spartans on Friday night at Kamloops Memorial Arena. The puck drops at 8:30 PM.
