The University of Victoria Men’s Hockey Club hosted its first Alumni Game and Golf Tournament for past players and coaches on Saturday, September 7th.
The day included an Alumni Game at the Ian Stewart Complex, followed by an afternoon of golf at the Highland Pacific Golf Course and concluded with a special banquet hosted at ‘The Lakes’.
Players and Coaches had a great time and appreciated the opportunity to get together, share old memories and continue to express their support for the Vikes Hockey club.
The UVIC Men’s Hockey Club was formed in 2006 and continues to participate in the British Columbia Inter-Collegiate Hockey League, where the team is tied for the all-time lead with 3 BCIHL League Championships along with numerous individual league awards.
"It was great to meet with past players and learn how successful they have become in life," says Vikes head coach Harry Schamhart. "The players are coaching minor hockey and supporting community events back home. It is not surprising to learn about the success of the players because during their time at UVIC they continually demonstrated the leadership, dedication and work ethic required to be successful."
It is the club’s intention that the Alumni Game becomes an annual event and continues to grow. UVIC has a long history of hockey dating back to the 1960’s when UVIC participated in the old Victoria Hockey League at Archie Browning Arena in Esquimalt.
UVIC then formed a Varsity Hockey team in the early 1970’s that ran for a 2-year period. It took until 2006, with the formation of the BCIHL, for high level competitive hockey to return to the University of Victoria.
Coach Schamhart and the current team would like to thank past players and coaches who attended and look forward to seeing them throughout the season and for next year’s Alumni event.
In the meantime, the team will shoot for its fourth BICHL title starting with their season home opener against Thompson Rivers University on Friday, September 27th at the Ian Stewart Arena for 7:30pm.
Go Vikes Go!
