2013 marks the fourth consecutive year that the University of Victoria Men’s Hockey Club, supported by Vikes Athletics and Recreation, are putting on a Summer Hockey Camp for Novice, Atom and Peewee hockey players.
The camp provides players with two ice sessions, a swim session and a play session each day.
The Ian Stewart Complex is an ideal setting for this program, as the full-service facility allows for parents to drop children off in the morning and pick them up at the end of day.
The hockey instructors are UVIC Students that play on the Vikes Hockey Club and are supported by Vikes Athletics and Recreation Administrative staff, lifeguards for the pool sessions and a Summer Camp instructor that leads the play sessions.
"Obviously we want the young players to realize they can have fun playing hockey, continue to work hard in school and in the future have the opportunity to attend university and still play hockey," says Vikes head coach Harry Schamhart.
This is the first year the Hockey School is running the program over a two-week period. The Vikes Hockey Team and Vikes Athletics and Recreation hope to continue to grow the Hockey Camp, which is a great opportunity for student athletes to connect with young hockey players and act as leaders and role models.
