Eastern Washington University is pleased to announce that goaltender Derek Moser (Tomah, WI) has committed to the Eagles for the 2013/14 B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League season.
Moser comes to Eastern after posting a 29-5 record over the last two seasons for the Southern Oregon Spartans and Rochester Ice Hawks. In 2011/12, he backstopped the Spartans in all the way to the USA Junior B National Tournament going 17-3 and posting a .901 save percentage during that time.
He went on to spend the 2012/13 campaign with Rochester, posting a 12-2 mark with a 2.77 GAA with a .915 save percentage before having his season ended by injury. Moser plans to major in mechanical engineering at EWU.
"We've been looking to add a goaltender who can contribute right away and after talking with and watching about 10-12 goalies it became obvious to me that Derek could and was the type of person we have made it a priority to bring into our group," says Eagles head coach Bill Shaw.
Moser qualified for automatic admission to EWU due to his high academic marks in high school as well as his standardized testing scores. He has one more season of junior hockey eligibility but made the choice to head the college route rather than return to the same level he’d played at the last two years.
His decision was also aided by the fact that he wanted to keep playing hockey but not at the expense of getting started on his degree in Mechanical Engineering, which isn’t offered at a lot of schools that also have hockey.
"When Derek visited the campus in the middle of May we were able to get him the standard appointments with Admissions and a tour, but also a time to talk with a professor in the Mechanical Engineering program and it seemed like that really sold Derek on the decision," said Shaw, who also mentioned how appreciative he was of the Engineering program to give Derek some of their time that day.
Moser will be reunited with Ice Hawks teammate Tanner Hawes at EWU. Both players committed the same day to the program. Moser is the sixth signing and the Eagles are expected to be announcing more soon.
