Selkirk College goaltender Alex Sirard has been named the British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League's Playoff MVP following an outstanding performance in the Saints' run to the 2013 League Championship.
Sirard started all four of Selkirk's postseason games and led his team to two-game series sweeps over the University of Victoria and Simon Fraser University. The 21-year old picked up two shutouts in those four games and posted a postseason-leading goals-against average (0.74) and save-percentage (.965).
"Alex was tremendous for our team all season and was especially great in the playoffs," says Saints head coach Jeff Dubois. "There were moments like in Game 2 of the Finals when we trailed 2-0 where giving up another goal really would have hurt us. He was always there to shut the door at those moments and give us a change to turn games around."
Sirard was also named the BCIHL's Top Goaltender during the regular season and was voted to the league's First All-Star team. He finished the season and playoffs with an overall record of 17-1 with a 2.13 goals-against and .916 save-percentage.
The BCIHL's Playoff All-Star team was also announced on Wednesday, with Simon Fraser University forward Brendan Silvester and defenceman Taylor Swaffield joining Selkirk College forwards Cody Fidgett and Jordan Wood as well as blueliner Kam Crawford and Sirard in goal.
