Simon Fraser University took a 1-0 lead in their first round series against Thompson Rivers on Friday night, cruising to a 6-1 home ice win in Burnaby.
Ben Van Lare and Brendan Silvester gave the Clan a two-goal cushion after 20 minutes, and the hosts extended their lead to four goals in the second with a tally from Jesse Mysiorek and a second from Van Lare.
Duncan Schulz drew the WolfPack within two before the end of the frame, but SFU continued to hit the back of the net in the third. Mike Ball restored the four-goal lead on an early power-play and Kody Dhaliwal capped the scoring minutes later.
Graeme Gordon made 26 saves to pick up the win while Shane Mainprize turned aside 31 shots in a losing effort.
The teams will meet again on Saturday night in Kamloops with SFU looking to eliminate the WolfPack anbd avoid a third-and-deciding game back at home on Sunday.
Faceoff for Game 2 is set for 8:00 PM.
