Selkirk College set a pair of B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League records on Saturday night, as the Saints picked up their 20th win and 40th point of the season to establish new league marks in both categories.
But the victory didn't come easy, as Selkirk needed a shootout to top Simon Fraser University by a 2-1 score on the road at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre in Burnaby.
The game remained scoreless through more than two periods until Saints blueliner Justin Sotkowy fired a point shot off an SFU player and past netminder Graeme Gordon 6:47 into the third. The lead was short-lived, however, as Trevor Milner drew the Clan even with seven minutes remaining in regulation to force overtime.
Five minutes of four-on-four play solved nothing, meaning that Selkirk moved on to their first shootout of the season. Sotkowy put the Saints ahead in the second round, only to see Jono Ceci reply on SFU's third shot. But Thomas Hardy ended the game moments later when he beat Gordon through the legs to seal a Saints victory.
Stephen Wolff was outstanding in goal for Selkirk, stopping 37 of 38 shots fired his way and turning aside shootout attempts from Milner and Colton Graf. Gordon was also solid but ultimately picked up his fourth loss in as many starts against the Saints this season.
Selkirk will wrap the regular season with a home-and-home series against Eastern Washington on March 1st and 2nd and open the playoffs at home on March 8th against a yet-to-be-determined opponent.
