Thompson Rivers University continued their dominance on home ice and moved into third place in the B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League standings on Saturday night with a 6-1 win over Eastern Washington.
The ‘Pack pick up four points this weekend after holding the Eagles to a single goal in both games.
"We just kept playing," said TRU head coach Don Schulz. "It was a very rewarding weekend to watch the boys. They played hard and with lots of heart both nights. We maintained our speed in all three zones."
TRU’s Colten DeFrias scored the first goal of the night; with a pass coming from linemate Alessio Tomassetti. EWU's Ryan Pajimola answered back in the first and put one by TRU’s Shane Mainprize for his team's lone goal on the night.
The second period belonged to TRU’s leading line. Tomassetti got the single goal of the period, with passes coming from DeFrias and Rigby Burgart.
"Alessio along with Colten and Rigby all had a strong night and played well," said Schulz.
In the third period the ‘Pack came together and capitalized with four more goals. The first came from Travis Herlein with assists from Cody Rose and Jake Howardson. Howardson then put the fourth goal pass EWU’s Jason Greenwall with an assist from Herlein. The fifth goal was also scored by TRU’s top line, as Tomassetti was credited with the goal with assists from DeFrias and Burgart.
The last goal of the night came from Herlein, with assists from DeFrias and Martin.
"Travis had a couple timely goals to maintain momentum throughout the 60 minutes. Our defensive core was very steady throughout," said Schulz.
Shane Mainprize had another solid game stopping 25 of 26 shots.
TRU swept the game's Three Stars: DeFrias was awarded the 1st Star following a five point night; Tomassetti was the 2nd Star with two goals and an assist; Herlein received the 3rd star with a two goal night.
