Eastern Washington University got 2013 off to an interesting start on Friday night winning 8-7 over Simon Fraser University after coming back from deficits of 6-2 and 7-4.
The Eagles opened the scoring less than 30 seconds into the game, but would fall behind by the midway point of the first period. They made a few attempts at a comeback and closed the gap a few different times only to see the lead extended again.
But the third period comeback couldn’t be answered by the Clan, who allowed four unanswered goals to a determined EWU squad.
Eagles Coach Bill Shaw said of the game: "sometimes you dig yourself a hole so large you can’t get out of it, but this group of guys never gave up and just kept working."
The Eagles benefited from a game that was played mostly five on five all night with only 5 penalties in the game.
"It really allowed us to get everyone involved and contributing. We had a goal from all four of our lines tonight and we needed every one of them. I liked the way we match up with SFU, but when I think about the match up I envision a 4-3 type game, not a run and gun game like we got into tonight," added Shaw.
The Eagles are no strangers to wild swings on the scoreboard this season, but this one finally went their way. Earlier in the year the team lost games against teams where they felt they controlled games.
"We’ve had a few leads get away from us this season and maybe tonight was a bit of things evening out," said Shaw.
Brenden Silvester led the way for SFU with 3 goals and 1 assist while Bret Kellogg and Uriah Machuga each had 2 goals and an assist for the Eagles.
Jason Greenwell picked up his second win of the year for the Eagles stopping 18 of 19 shots he faced after entering the game in the second period.
Notes: This marks the largest comeback in the team’s BCIHL history as well as establishes a new record for the most goals scored in one game by EWU. Jason Greenwell attempted to score on the empty net with 20 seconds to go in the 3rd, but missed just wide on the left side.
