Home or away, the venue made no difference this weekend for Thompson Rivers University, as the WolfPack dropped a 7-1 decision for the second consecutive evening to Simon Fraser University, this time in Burnaby.
Despite more competition and character behind the play of the boys in black and orange, they were unable to build enough momentum to outplay the Clan for a second night in a row.
SFU feated on early power-play opportunities, as Colton Graf and Kale Wild each scored with the man-advantage to give the hosts a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes.
And while the WolfPack cut the deficit to one off the stick of Alessio Tomassetti on a power-play of their own early in the second, they gave up another pair shorthanded before intermission and headed into the third down 4-1.
SFU Captain Chris Hoe scored a pair midway through the third period and blueliner Taylor Swaffield added the Clan's fifth power-play marker of the night to cap the scoring. The game then got chippy late, with a number of fights taking place in the final moments.
"The game didn’t have the same feel," said head coach Don Schulz, who felt his team performed better after a disappointing effort on Friday. "The guys competed and when it got spirited towards the end, they all stood up for each other. There was no comparison in how we played, the score doesn’t do us justice."
Shane Mainprize manned the net for all but the final 30 seconds on Saturday and took the loss, while Evan Kurylo picked up the win for SFU.
