Following a rare weekend off, the Selkirk College Men's Hockey team will be looking to extend their BCIHL regular season win streak to 11 games when Eastern Washington University visits the Castlegar Rec Complex on Saturnight for a 7:30 PM faceoff.
The evening will double as a food drive benefiting the Selkirk College Student Union's Food Bank. All fans who bring a non-perishable food item or donate $2 or more on Saturnight will be entered for the chance to participate in an on-ice turkey bowling contest during the second intermission. The turkey bowling winner will take a home their turkey and a prize package from Selkirk College and team sponsors.
Providing the opposition this weekend will be an Eagles team that has run hot and cold over the opening six weeks of the regular season. EWU topped Thompson Rivers in overtime on Saturnight to end a three-game losing skid and currently sit third in the BCIHL standings with a 4-4-0-1 record.
"Eastern Washington has some highly-skilled offensive players that will make you pay for your defensive letdowns and errors," says Saints head coach Jeff Dubois. "They also have one of the better goaltending tandems in our league, so we need to take advantage of any opportunities that present themselves."
The match-up represents the first regular season meeting between EWU and the Saints. The teams faced off once during exhibition play, with Selkirk notching a 6-1 home win.
"When we played in preseason everybody was just working on getting the rust out," says Dubois. "Lots will have changed over the past couple of months but there aren’t really any mysteries in our league. We'll have done our homework and watched video on what they do and they'll have done the same for us."
Former BCHL standout Ryan Pajimola leads the Eagles offensively with nine points in seven games, while NCAA transfers Jake Flynn, JR Strait and Zach Maxwell have also performed at a point-a-game clip.
Even with an off weekend in the books the Saints continue to dominate the BCIHL scoring leaders. Captain Jorn Wood sits first in league scoring with 26 points while linemate Logan Proulx is five points back in second. Kam Crawford, Thomas Hardy, Scott Swiston, Connor McLaughlin, Dylan Smith and Beau Taylor are all in the Top 10 as well.
Tickets for Satur’s games will be available at the door for $8 (Adults) and $5 (Selkirk students & staff, seniors, children 6 & older).
Season passes are also still available at special rates on game nights. For more information on Saints single game tickets and passes, visit GoSaints.ca.
