Simon Fraser University got back to their winning ways on home ice Saturday with a 5-2 victory over Trinity Western University.
The win takes SFU to 5-1 on the season and keeps the Clan in second place in the BCIHL standings despite having played the fewest games of any of the league's six teams.
NCAA D1 transfer Nick Sandor put the hosts out to an early 1-0 lead when he netted on an SFU power-play just 2:52 into regulation and saw teammate Tadz Brown double the lead later in the frame.
But Josh Stephenson put the Spartans on the board with a man-advantage strike of his own with just 15 seconds remaining before intermission, and a scoreless second period put TWU within striking distance heading into the final 20 minutes.
But the Clan made quick work of their visitors in the third period, outshooting the Spartans by a 23-4 margin and scoring twice early in the frame off the sticks of Ben Van Lare and Colton Graf. Stephenson and Graf then traded goals late in regulation to put the finishing touches on a 5-2 final.
Trinity Western goalie Tim Zwiers made 46 saves on 51 shots in the loss. Evan Kurylo faced 20 shots in picking up his second win of the season.
"It was a solid game for us for 40 minutes but in the third period SFU really cranked it up," said Spartans coach Dwayne Lowdermilk. "It’s another disappointing loss but we know we’re not far from getting that first win and starting to get this thing rolling."
The Spartans will return to the ice for their final game of the fall semester on November 23rd when they host Eastern Washington at 7:00 PM at the Langley Events Centre. Simon Fraser, meanwhile, is in Victoria for a pair of games on Friday, November 23rd and Saturday, November 24th.
