Simon Fraser University forward Ben Van Lare has been named the British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League's Player of the Week for the week ending October 14th.
Van Lare scored twice and added three assists on Saturday night to post the first 5-point game of the young BCIHL season in SFU's 12-1 home ice victory over the University of Victoria.
At one point Van Lare was credited with points on five consecutive Clan goals, beginning with an assist on Jono Ceci's first period marker that extended the SFU lead to 5-0. He then added a goal of his own before intermission and found the net again 2:12 into the second period before setting up a Kale Wild power-play marker. He also assisted on a third period goal by team captain Chris Hoe.
Following his performance on Saturday, Van Lare now sits atop the BCIHL's scoring charts with seven points in two games. That quick start represents a continuation of his outstanding 2011/12 season that saw him set a new BCIHL scoring record with 57 points in 24 games.
Runners up for this week's award include Selkirk College forward Logan Proulx, Thompson Rivers University forward Colten DeFrias and Eastern Washington University forward Bobby Ward.
