The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack came away without a victory in their final two preseason games this weekend, but their final exhibition performance left a number of positives heading into the B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League regular season.
The WolfPack went toe-to-toe for almost 70 minutes with one of top college hockey teams in Canada on Saturday night before ultimately falling by a 4-3 score in double overtime to the SAIT Trojans at the Calgary-based school's Eye Opener tournament.
"This was a hard fought outcome against a very competent opponent," said WolfPack head coach Don Schulz. "We took them to double overtime despite some adversity having lost five of our players to injury.”
WolfPack goals were scored by John Bokla, with a pair, and Scott Bolliefer.
Schulz added that the penalty kill was good as they had to kill a trio of five-on-three scenarios.
"The team showed improvement in a lot of areas and showed their potential. It ws a rewarding experience for the coaching staff."
Shane Mainprize started the game and played until the 10-minute mark of the second period when he was replaced by Riley Wall.
The WolfPack kick off their regular season next weekend in Langley against Trinity Western University. Their first home game is October 12th at Memorial Arena against the defending BCIHL champions from the University of Victoria.
