Simon Fraser University saw their crosstown rivals from UBC even their annual exhibition series record at 1-1 on Saturday night when the Thunderbirds got the better end of an 8-0 score to capture the 2012 University Hockey Classic title at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre in Burnaby.
The T-Birds won the two game series 2-0 after a 4-3 overtime victory at home on Friday night.
UBC forwards Scott Wasden and Dillion Wagner led the way with a pair of goals each, while Jordan White and Steven Stanford combined for the shutout.
It was a slow start to the game as neither team could seem to find their groove early on. But the Thunderbirds would get a power play nine minutes into the opening frame and they would make it count as Wasden scored from the side of the net to give UBC a 1-0 lead.
The Thunderbirds looked to add to their lead, but Scott Macdonald was denied point blank by SFU goalie Graeme Gordon.
UBC's Jordan White looked sharp in net as well, stopping SFU on a 2-on-1 and then shutting the door on Jono Ceci on a late power play. 1-0 is how things stood through 20 minutes.
The Thunderbirds took over the game in the second period dominating play and scoring three goals. Wasden scored his second goal of the game 1:41 into the frame to put the 'Birds up 2-0. After being a scratch last night, Michael Wilgosh proved his worth banging home a loose puck to put UBC up by three.
Last night's overtime hero Joe Antilla got in the act, potting his second goal in as many games to make it 4-0 for the Thunderbirds.
White was solid in the frame, making a couple of big saves on the power play, including point blank on Ben Van Lare.
UBC proved to be too much to handle for SFU on this night as they continued to find the back of the net in the third period. 43 seconds into the period Dillion Wagner tipped home a Nate Fleming shot to give the Thunderbirds a 5-0 advantage.
Less then two minutes later, Justin McCrae got in on the act scoring a power play goal to make it 6-0. Wagner continued to show off his hand-eye coordination, this time tipping in a Ilan Cumberbirch shot to give UBC a 7-0 lead. Brad Hoban added a fourth power play goal on the night to make it an 8-0 final.
SFU finished the preseason with a 1-3 record and will now prepare to face Eastern Washington University in their BCIHL regular season opener on Saturday, October 6th.
