Selkirk opens preseason with win over KIJHL's Beaver Valley Nitehawks

Selkirk College opened its four-game preseason schedule on Sunday night on a winning note, topping the KIJHL's Beaver Valley Nitehawks by an 8-2 score on the road in Fruitvale.

The line consisting of captain Jordan Wood, Logan Proulx and former Nitehawk Mason Spear combined for eight points in the victory, with Proulx scoring twice and assisting on two other markers. Lucas Hildebrand, Connor McLaughlin, Cody Fidgett and Thomas Hardy also picked up goals in the win.

Hildebrand opened the scoring for the Saints 1:32 into the first period when his shot from the blueline found its way through a screen and eluded Nitehawks goalkeeper Zach Perehudoff. The Nitehawks tied the game briefly before Proulx scored his first of the night and Wood extended the lead to 3-1 before intermission.

McLaughlin and Beaver Valley's Luke Reimer exchanged goals early in the second period before the Saints offence took over in the game's second half. Proulx and Spear brought the visitors' lead to 6-2 before the end of the frame while Fidgett and Hardy capped the scoring in the third period.

Stephen Wolff and Chris Hurry shared the duties in net for the Saints. Wolff picked up the win while allowing two goals over 30 minutes before being relieved by Hurry, who wasn't beaten in his half-game of action.

The Saints will now prepare for their first home test of the preseason on Friday when Thompson Rivers University visits the Castlegar Recreation Centre. Faceoff is scheduled for 7:30pm and tickets are available at the door for $5.00.
