The Eastern Washington University men's hockey program is pleased to announce c ommitment from defenseman Zach Maxwell (Spokane, WA) to join the Eagles for the 2012/13 B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League season.
Maxwell comes to EWU after a year in the NCAA with the University of Wisconsin – Superior Yellow Jackets, where he scored once and added three asists in 17 games as a freshman.
Previously, Zach spent his junior career with the Helena Bighorns of NORPAC, where in his final season he served as the team captain and captured a league championship.
"Zach is an offensive-minded defenseman that should be big help to our power-play next season," said EWU head coach Bill Shaw.
Maxwell’s ability to help the offense showed in his stellar junior career with the Bighorns, where he was well over a point-per-game player on the blue line. The 21-year old scored 48 goals and netted 254 points in 217 regular season games for Helena and added 54 points in 42 playoff contests. As a 20-year old he was the NORPAC's top scoring defenceman with 16 goals and 78 points, good for 7th overall in league scoring.
Shaw added that Maxwell’s decision to transfer to EWU is another good sign for the growth of the program as it enters its second BCIHL campaign.
"In past years we have made it our main focus to get the Washington-born players to come to EWU and having players like Zach decide that EWU was the best fit for them after seeing another option will only help in achieving that goal."
Maxwell joins forwards Nick Redding and Alec Burks as the Eagles' third commitment for the 2012/13 season.
