The Okanagan College Coyotes are pleased to announce a player commitment from Chris Derochie (Rossland, BC) to attend Okanagan College for the 2012/13 British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League season. Derochie has been accepted into OC’s water engineering program beginning this fall.
Derochie was the Captain of the 2012 KIJHL champion Beaver Valley Nitehawks this past season. The Nitehawks put together one of the most successful seasons in KIJHL history comprising an impressive 42-7-0-3 record in regular season play with Derochie as their leader on and off the ice.
The Nitehawks followed up their regular season success with an impressive sweep over the Kelowna Chiefs to secure the KIJHL Championship.
Much like his team, Derochie enjoyed a tremendous regular season, finishing with 29 goals, 72 assists and 101 points in 52 games, good enough for second overall in the KIJHL league scoring. He followed that up with a terrific post season in which he scored 5 goals, 22 assists for 27 points in 21 playoff games.
He finishes his KIJHL career with 185 points in 147 career games over 3 seasons.
"I am excited to begin the next chapter in hockey career," says Derochie. "I feel ready to make the jump to the BCIHL and combine schooling with hockey. I am very happy the Okanagan College has a great hockey program so that I can continue playing, while studying water engineering."
The Coyotes are thrilled that Chris will suit up for the team next season.
"We are very pleased to add a player with Chris’s skill set and play making ability to our team," says GM Kolby Barnstable. "Chris carries an impressive hockey resume and tremendous leadership skills that will be an asset to our club going forward."
Derochie was named the Most Sportsmanlike Player in the Neil Murdoch division this past season to go along with his Top Scorer award. He also becomes the 5th player to join the OC Coyotes program after donning a Beaver Valley Nighthawks uniform.
