Simon Fraser University got the win they needed to capture their third British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League regular season title in a span of four years on Saturday night, topping the Thompson Rivers WolfPack by a 7-3 score on home ice at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre.
The victory, combined with an Okanagan College win at Eastern Washington, gives the Clan a three-point lead atop the BCIHL standings with only one game remaining for both teams.
As a result, SFU will receive a bye on the first day of the League Championships in Kamloops and begin their quest for a third straight BCIHL title on Thursday versus the winner of a 3rd Place-4th Place contest a day earlier.
Okanagan, meanwhile, is now confirmed to finish second overall and face the third place WolfPack in their tournament opener on the Wednesday evening.
The University of Victoria is guaranteed a spot in the five-team event, though their seeding remains up in the air pending games next weekend. Eastern Washington is in a position to capture the fifth spot with a win over Selkirk College next weekend, while a tie or a loss would open the door for Trinity Western University to make the tournament with a late regular season push.
The 2012 BCIHL Championships run March 14th to 18th at Memorial Arena in Kamloops.
