The TRU WolfPack continued their inconsistent play by dropping a 6-4 decision on Saturday night to the Selkirk College Saints in Castlegar.
The 'Pack opened the scoring at 16:55 of the first period on a goal from Nathan Michaels (assists to Rylee Orr, Cody Lockwood). Selkirk tied the score at one at 12:07 on a goal from Scott Traverse, but the Wolfpack went into the first intermission with a 2-1 lead after Andrew Fisher fired home a power play marker at 10:38 (assists to Shane Oatway, Curtis Tonello).
TRU starting goaltender Riley Wall faced 9 Saints shots in the first period while TRU directed 15 shots at Selkirk goalie Spencer Wong.
The 'Pack had a terrible second period allowing three goals (Jordan Wood 15:47, Graham Proulx 10:26 and Caleb Georgetti at 1:49) and trailed 4-2 heading into the third. Wall faced 7 Selkirk shots while Wong faced 8 shots.
The Pack changed goaltenders to start the 3rd period with Shane Mainprize coming in relief of Wall but the change didn't create the desired result as the teams exchanged goals (Wood with his second and third goals on the night at 15:12 and 13:47) before the Pack drew close with goals from Jassi Sangha (assists from David Gore, Curtis Tonello) and Jose Reyes (assists from Gore, Oatway). Shots in the 3rd favored TRU 10-6.
Head Coach Don Schulz expressed his disappointment and frustration with the result: "putting it mildly I'm not very impressed. But I also think Selkirk deserves recognition for having a solid game plan and sticking to it."
"We came out flat to start the game but took a 2-1 lead into the intermission. I am very frustrated with our lack of intensity and focus, case in point being out scored 8-0 in our last 2 second periods. We'll look to regroup and see how we respond to a couple of lackluster efforts."
Notes: the WolfPack and Selkirk College close out the weekend series at 1:30 pm on Sunday.
